Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Model Number SM-N985* & SM-N986* Differences

Updated on Sep 10, 2020 by Tuan Do

Between the two new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 versions, the Note 20 Ultra 5G is the high-end one with the best hardware that Samsung could get its hands on. The phone was released in August 2020 with the premium price tag from $1,299 to $1,449.

Both Note 20 versions share some key specs including the Snapdragon 865 Plus or Exynos 990 SoC, however, the Note 20 Ultra is better in many important aspects including design, material, display, RAM, storage, camera, and 5G capability. Specifically, it uses the latest Gorilla Glass 7 Victus on the front and rear glass, besides, the front display is larger, sharper and slightly curved to minimize bezels. That is a massive 6.9-inch AMOLED display with the resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels and 120Hz refresh rate. It features 12GB of RAM and 128GB/512GB of storage, moreover, the storage is expandable with a microSD card of up to 1TB in size. The S Pen on the Note 20 Ultra has a 9ms response time which is a huge improvement over 26ms response time on the Note 20. The Ultra edition also has better 5G capability as it supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave bands.

The Note 20 Ultra still features a triple camera system but it is upgraded with a 108MP primary camera with laser autofocus system and a 12MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. Notably, it has a Space Zoom feature offering up to 50x zoom. Another improvement is the Ultra wideband (UWB) for faster file transfers; That means this is the first UWB-enabled Android device on the market.

Other features are pretty much the same as seen on the Note 20. You can find new S Pen gestures, better Microsoft integration, Nearby Share feature, 8K video recording at 24fps, Dolby technology, IP68 water resistance, wireless DeX, and Android 10.

The Note 20 Ultra comes in numerous model numbers starting with SM-N985 or SM-N986. The model numbers specify the color option (Mystic Black, Mystic White, Mystic Bronze), processor (Snapdragon 865+, Exynos 990), carrier, country, and cellular bands. While the Note20 Ultra is a 5G phone in most markets, Samsung still released a 4G variant with model number SM-N985*. You can check out all the differences in this table.

Following Cristian’s question, if the SM-N985F is the Snapdragon version, same as sold in the US, will all the specs be the same as the SM-N986UZNAXAA?

Additionally, can I buy the SM-N986UZNAXAA Mystic Bronze – 128GB model today in California?

    Thank you.

I believe not all Note 20 Ultra 5G supports the mmwave. For example the SM-N9860 only shows to have Sub 6 and no mmwave (N260, N261). Is this true???
    Many thanks.

Even though it is just getting off the ground ,awesome thread! I am looking at either a SM-N9860 or a SM-N986B. I live in the California and Baja California. Which means I need all the Telcel and T-Mobile bands. So I think either would be OK, but not sure how the OS (the former is Hong Kong, latter is Australia) will differ. Any thoughts welcome!

On this website it seems as if the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G model: SM-N986UZNAXAA is the best choice because its the only model that has access to all bands specifically the 5G: Bands n2, n5, n41, n66, n71, n260, n261. But I think this is a misprint because I purchased that model and threw in a 5G Verizon sim card and I never seen the 5G symbol pop in on my phone, nor was I able to switch bands from Global or LTE to 5G. The phone in my opinion doesn’t support the n260 or n261 5G bands, however I did swap sim cards with T-Mobile and the 5G option appeared in the network settings so I’m assuming it supports all the other 5G bands n2, n5, n41, n66, n71.
Because of that observation, I just recently ordered a Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G SM-N986UZNAVZW in hopes that it supports all bands. It arrives 12/09/2020 but I guess I should have read this page first because it’s saying it only supports 5G: n260, n261. I thought I was getting the model that supports all bands. So please someone let me know if this information is accurate or misprint otherwise I may have to order the At&t model SM-N986UZKAATT or the Sprint model SM-N986UZNASPR

Yes SM-N986UZNAXAAdoes supports 5G but currently it doesn’t 5G UW on the Verizon Wireless 5G UW network. Any other network outside of verizon does support 5G and you would actually see the 5G indicator pop up near the signal indicator.
