Samsung Galaxy Note 8 SM-N950* Model Number Differences

By Tuan Do

Samsung officially announced the new generation of their phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The device starts shipping in September 2017 with a premium price tag of around $900 (the full retail price for the factory-unlocked version).

This is really a great step forward for Samsung, considering the fact that they could have dropped the Note series after the battery-exploding reports last year. Samsung handled the scandal professionally and now we have the all new Galaxy Note 8.

Like previous generations, the Note 8 targets business users as it combines high-end specs, a massive display, productivity suite, and a stylus. If you had to return the Note 7, now you can upgrade to the Note 8 with a lot of important improvements.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos 8895 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, Bixby voice assistant, and 3300mAh battery. The design is also refined with the 6.3-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED Infinity Display, it is not only bigger but also looks much sleeker than other smartphones on the market. This is also the first time we see a dual camera setup on a Samsung phone; both are 12MP lenses and have optical image stabilization. The wide-angle lens has an aperture of f/1.7 and the telephoto lens has a f/2.4 aperture. You will see some camera tricks like Live Focus or Dual Capture.

Similar to previous releases, the Note 8 also comes with some different model numbers which are available for some specific carriers and regions. The model number will decide which processor is built inside, you will either have a Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895. Most countries will receive the Exynos version but some other countries requiring the CDMA chip, like the U.S. or China, will have the Snapdragon 835. Both of them have Samsung’s 10nm LPE process and actually has very similar performance that you cannot notice the difference during normal usage.

Now, let’s check out all model numbers of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. All of the numbers start with SM-N950 but the suffixes are different, depending on the market. So, we will have some models like SM-N950W, SM-N9500, SM-N9508, SM-N950F, SM-N950 S/K/L, or SM-N950FD.

I just bought a Note 8 that is supposed to be unlocked. Plan to eventually use it with Verizon prepaid plan and also international sim when I travel.
Best buy supplied model SM-N950U1ZVAX. I don’t find that anywhere above. Will this work ??

update: It does appear to work. Verizon was able to transfer all the data from my samsung S3 to the Note 8 and I’m up and running on Verizon on prepaid plan after installing prepaid sim card.

Caribbean region here (Dominican Republic) to be more precise. Which models can be used here in the DR as well as the US and Central America or South or all.
I’ve purchased Notes in the past (N2 from Claro, which was locked and absolutely overpriced as anyone could figure; and N3 from Samsung here in the DR, at almost over 400dls over the price of I would’ve gotten it from Amazon), and I’m just not into making that same mistake.

That being said I have no idea what to look for.
My current company is Orange (which was recently purchased by Altice), is there any chance you can help me out at identifying the model I should look for in Amazon? Thank you!!

Hi Android fans! I recently purchased my first dual SIM phone Huawei mate 10 non PRO. Working great with Rogers and Project Fi. I love the advantage of having both SIMs on standby, plus the advantage of voice over LTE and 4G internet at the same time. I wonder which note 8 dual SIM would be best ? Note 8 SM-N950F/DS vs Note 8 SM-N9500 ? I believe both are dual SIM but I see a 256 GB internal storage variant available for 9500 version which would be a sweet perk!

Hi, Once you purchase an unlocked version of a phone which is GSM. It should work in any other country.
Normally,The international versions of the phone are preferable .
      I hope this helps

Hi! I am thinking of buying an SMN950 (I didn’t ask about the suffix so I hope this is enough information). I am on MetroPCS in the USA. I called MetroPCS and they said they support WiFi calling even on phones not purchased from them but they said some Note 8 do not even have a Setting for WiFi calling! So would this phone have a Setting for WiFi calling? Thanks for your time!

I have N9500 unlocked in Canada, Lte doesn’t show at all, only 4G, the phone doesn’t support Lte at all or when they say 4g is the same thing? MMS don’t work anymore without data ON, is that phone from HK fake? Thank you

    • Mikael says

      Mar 14, 2018 at 1:59 pm

No it is not a fake but is made for Hong Kong, China. For Canada you should use SM-N950W. It appears 4G because it works in UMTS 3.5G speed which the phone displays as 4G. But it is not the speed of LTE for the band you need. It may work on other LTE bands in Canada but the model you have is for China, not for Canada.
