MILESEEY S50C Review: A Laser Distance Meter Built for Outdoor Measurements

By Tuan Do

I tried a couple of laser distance meters a few years ago but I was not satisfied with their performance. They work well for indoor projects but they all have the same weakness once you step outside. Under bright sunlight, the red laser dot becomes nearly impossible to see, and even the display can be difficult to read. That’s why I’m interested in the new MILESEEY S50C. It does not simply increase the measuring range, but also addresses the biggest pain points of outdoor measurement.

Disclosure: We received the S50C as a courtesy for review purposes. However, the review is intended to provide honest, unbiased insights about the product, based on personal experiences and observations.

You don’t have to be a contractor to find the S50C useful. It works for any outdoor projects like measuring fences, building exteriors, or property boundaries. The overall design feels modern and durable. It comes with a nice carrying case and a USB-C charging cable.

Compared to the simple monochrome displays found on many budget laser measures, the S50C features a vibrant 2.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen that’s protected by Gorilla Glass. The display is sharp, colorful, and responsive, making it feel more like using a smartphone than a traditional measuring tool. The interface is intuitive, so I rarely needed to consult the manual after the initial setup.

One of the biggest improvements is visibility outdoors. I purposely performed most of my testing under direct sunlight. Even on a bright summer afternoon, the AMOLED display remained surprisingly easy to read. The high contrast and brightness made measurement values clearly visible without having to shade the screen with my hand. This makes the S50C much more practical for contractors, landscapers, surveyors, and homeowners who frequently work outside.

The green laser is a very important upgrade. Green lasers are naturally more visible to the human eye than traditional red lasers, and the difference is immediately noticeable. At shorter distances of around 60ft, I could still identify the laser point much easier. However, like every laser measure, the dot eventually becomes difficult to spot at further distances or when the target surface isn’t reflective. Fortunately, the S50C has a built-in camera system to help.

The camera is my favorite feature of the S50C. Instead of trying to locate a tiny laser dot hundreds of feet away, I simply pointed the camera toward my target and used the digital zoom for confirmation. I tested it at 300ft distance without any issue, the camera made it much easier to ensure I was aiming at the correct location before taking a measurement. It even could measure at the maximum distance of 670ft, which is quite impressive. The 8x zoom becomes even more useful in that case.

This feature also speeds up the measuring process. With a conventional laser measure, you often have to reposition several times because it is difficult to know exactly where the laser is pointing. With the S50C, target confirmation happens almost instantly. I spent less time adjusting my aim and more time collecting measurements.

The camera system proved especially useful when measuring narrow posts, fence corners, roof edges, and other small targets. These are situations where a traditional laser measure often requires multiple attempts because the laser may land on the wrong surface. Being able to visually confirm the aiming point significantly reduces mistakes and increases confidence in the final measurement.

In terms of accuracy, the S50C performs exactly as expected. MILESEEY rates it at ±1 mm accuracy. I compared with my tape measurement at shorter distances and have the exact same results throughout my testing. Using the measure tape at longer distances is extremely difficult and inaccurate, so you definitely need a laser meter.

Beyond basic distance measurements, the S50C includes area, volume, indirect Pythagorean calculations, continuous measurement, point-to-point measurement, and angle measurement. These functions are fairly standard for higher-end laser distance meters, but the large touchscreen makes them much easier to access than navigating through tiny monochrome menus.

Another nice feature is the ability to connect the device to the MILESEEY app. Measurements can be transferred directly to your phone, so you can organize projects easier without manually writing down every value. I might not need this feature as a homeowner but for professionals documenting job sites, this can save a lot of time.

The battery life of the device is really great. Since laser measurements only require brief bursts of power, I didn’t find myself worrying about charging during normal use. USB-C charging is also a welcome convenience compared to older devices.

Of course, no product is perfect. The S50C costs more than entry-level laser distance meters, and users who only measure rooms indoors a few times each year probably won’t benefit enough from its advanced features. If your typical projects involve measuring furniture or small indoor spaces, a basic laser measure will accomplish the same task at a much lower price.

However, if you frequently work outdoors, the additional investment starts to make much more sense. The camera-assisted targeting isn’t just a gimmick – it solves one of the biggest frustrations with laser distance meters. The S50C is currently available on its official website for $349.99.
