An Excellent Review of Sony Xperia U

Updated on Aug 2, 2019 by Guest Authors

Sony Xperia U is a combination of curvaceous backing, bold corners as well as transparent banding around its base. This cell phone with a 3.5 inch WVGA screen is something that can certainly interest you. Read on to find out what all it has to offer.

Design

The phone has a plastic design and the form factor is small making it rather pocketable. Sony Xperia U is 12 mm thick. It seems to be pretty solid and light as well as easy to handle.

In the transparent strip (at the bottom of fascia) you will find three icons with corresponding capacitive dots above. These might appear to be a bit confusing but are easy to handle once you get used to it. Xperia U does not give you expandable storage.

Sony Xperia is the NXT design which will certainly add flair to your cell phone.  The base present below the transparent strip can be replaced with certain colored variants (pink and yellow for now).

It also has a color picking illuminating strip which is present at the base and will display a highlight color selected by the phone while you view an image.

Sony Xperia U – Battery

Sony Xperia U offers a battery which is rated at 1.320mAh. The company claims that it can last for above six hours of talk time and about 472 hours of standby time. The Smartphone users today find it hard to believe the second claim.

You will realize that it is indeed a good performer when you use your phone to use social networking sites or for the camera. It has been found out that if you use your phone for the purposes motioned above, the battery might last you for a day.

Sony offers you (in the latest Android interface) a power management app which will let you put your mobile to sleep overnight on schedule or set the features of battery management to turn off the features which consume a lot of power automatically when a certain level of battery remains.

Sony Xperia U – Performance

Sony Xperia U has a NovaThor U8500 Dual core 1 GHz processor as well as Mali-400MP GPU which is slower. The general performance of the phone is quite good. You can easily flick around homescreens and through the applications. Stutter and lag will appear very seldom.  Web browsing is great and gives you ‘pinch to zoom’ as well as double tapping which result in smooth transaction. You might face a little hurdle on webpages that are heavier or those which have Flash but otherwise you may browse smoothly and without any hurdles. Hence Sony Xperia U has done well as far as performance is concerned.

Sony Xperia U – Camera

The Sony Xperia U sports a 5 megapixel camera which isn’t too great but is not bad either. Under right circumstances, it can be used for taking some really great photos where colors and details are good. However the noise reduction always appears to be in the images. If the lighting conditions are fine, it is not an issue as such. In case of poor lighting conditions, the images are smeared and the details are taken out along with noise.

One might find it difficult to use the two stage keys for operating the camera which are given at the side of the phone. Too much effort is required to press the button completely so that you can take a picture. Tap to focus is not available in camera app as well. If you are willing to focus before you click the picture you need to hold down the on screen camera key or the physical button. The camera also has 720p video recording which is not at all great.

Price

The European launch price of Sony Xperia U is 259 Euros (343 USD). Not a bad deal indeed as Sony Xperia U has a lot to offer.

My verdict

If you are not looking for a very large display size then Sony Xperia U will be a good choice for you.

The phone consists of the features, speed as well as the power of Larger Android models which cost way too much. The only thing which you have to compromise on in Sony Xperia U is the display size.

The video performance and not enough onboard storage space are two other drawbacks of this otherwise amazing phone.

If you do not really care about the drawbacks mentioned earlier you must go for this phone. It has every feature you look for in a Smartphone and it is affordable as well.

The most eye catching effect can be generated from its illuminating strip which can make first contact with its users.
