How to Remove the Black Plastic Insert in Breville Portafilter

By Tuan Do

If you are using a Breville espresso machine, you might find a black plastic insert on the bottom of its included portafilter. This piece is made to minimize heat loss into the bottom and regulate pressure for consistent extraction. Over time, coffee oils and residues can build up and make the area dirty. Here is how to remove this plastic insert and clean the portafilter thoroughly.

Firstly, you can use a spare basket to pry out the filter basket from the portafilter. You’ll see a black plastic disc covering the bottom. Unscrew the double spout underneath the portafilter. Use a chopstick or any small object to carefully push the plastic piece from the bottom up, working around slowly to avoid damaging the portafilter.

Now all parts are removed, you can see that they are very wet and dirty although I rinsed the portafilter and left it dry for 1 day. You can clean all those parts with water and soapy water. If it is not too dirty, you can just wipe them with a microfiber cloth and let it dry before reassembling. Regular cleaning the portafilter is very important to maintain the best espresso quality. When I used this Breville portafilter, I had to clean it at least once a week, otherwise, it would look disgusting.
