Want to Work in Tech? Skills That Can Land You a Job

Updated on Aug 6, 2020 by Guest Authors

Working in the tech industry is extremely competitive due to the potential of certain roles. The misconception that you have had to work in tech previously to obtain relevant skills is still believed by some. A great copywriter can work in any area of business as all industries require engaging and interesting content for their brands. The fact that content marketing has a larger impact than ever before also assists in the demand for quality content. Skills that can be utilized in tech might not be as obvious to some while other skills translate perfectly. The following are a mix of both types of skills that can land you a job in tech for the first time.

Writers Needed for Marketing

Writers are in-demand as mentioned above due to the immense amount of content needed in both print and online. A writer that has specialized in writing product descriptions using SEO best practices can find steady work or a full-time job. Writers that are versatile can find work quite easily. A writer that has had success writing articles, eBooks, email blasts, newsletters, and everything in-between are great hires. The company blog will need a consistent brand tone. An editor that also takes on writing responsibilities are needed throughout the industry. Compiling a portfolio of published pieces in the form of website links or snippets from print publications is imperative. No company is going to hire a writer without seeing what they have written in the past. Images need to have the appropriate tags that attract readers which is another form of content creation. Look into a private docker registry by JFrog when creating images. This will allow a content creator to see all versions of an image that can be helpful during approval processes by clients.

Natural Salesperson

Sales will always be a highly sought-after skill that some people possess naturally. Once a great salesperson learns a product they can start producing at high levels. The commissions in the tech industry are immense. A successful sales professional should consider a switch that has higher income potential. Examples of pitches that you have written or put together for a presentation should be a part of your portfolio. Show those interviewing you the level of work that you do when you know a product/service and have time to prepare. The best salespeople continually look for ways to improve their pitch or closing tactics. Take the time to gather data from past sales to see where improvements can be made. Recording sales calls can give you feedback as you might be able to detect where the sale was lost.

Coding/Web Development Skills

The ease of managing a software development project can be increased with a streamlined project management system. Collaboration oftentimes is an extremely important part in developing the perfect software. Streamlining this should be priority of the project management team. Experience with project management along with coding/web development skills can land a job in tech quickly. The issue becomes that someone with the skills yet inexperienced or in the freelance world might be able to make more money on their own. For those with experience, a job at the right company can eliminate the need to hustle by working weekends to earn extra money. Delivering high-quality work is far easier in coding when deadlines are reasonable and the web developer is mentally sharp.

Web Design

Web design skills can be learned due to interest or necessity for a person that was asked to do design at a previous position. Technology companies like that of a digital marketing agency will have a lot of work for a person with web design skills. Skills with web design being supplemental can also help land a job in tech. Web design does not mean what it used to due to the large number of people that have learned web design skills. Plenty of companies outsource their web design to freelancers so this could be an option to work with instead of at a technology company.

Data-Based Strategist

A person that can take a look at data then create a workable strategy will continue to be valuable in the tech industry. Artificial intelligence can help translate this data eliminating error. A detailed creation of a strategy is still dependent on humans for the time being. The data could impact various departments whether it is creating content based on data or tweaking pitches based on another set of data. Tools that gather data are available for a variety of tasks that can be improved with the analysis of data. There are just those people that are great at creating plans for growth or to retain clients. Do not underestimate your ability to create detailed plans as this is valuable regardless of industry. Working in tech is a dream that you can make a reality with the skills/experience above. Take time to revamp your resume to make it more tech-focused in order to land the job of your dreams.
