Syllable D900s True Wireless Earbuds Review – No Strings Attached

By Tuan Do

I’ve tested tons of wireless earbuds on TechWalls, however, none of them is truly ‘wireless’. They all come with a cord or band connecting the 2 earbuds and wrapping around your neck.

We started seeing a wave of true wireless earbuds since early 2015 but most of the products are so expensive and out of budget of most average consumers. The Syllable D900s is probably the most affordable option at the moment, let’s check it out.

Unboxing Video

Design & Features

The product comes in a nice little plastic box, along with some other accessories like a carrying pouch, a mini USB charging cable, a string and additional ear tips.

I always wanted a pair of wireless earbuds with no strings attached, and the Syllable D900s really delivered. There is no wire between the earbuds and you also don’t need any cable to charge them.

The plastic box is not just to showcase the product, it is actually a charging station as well. Just place the 2 earbuds so that their metal contacts touch the charging thimbles inside the box, then you will see the earbuds are fully charged within 30 minutes. The box is equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery, so you even don’t need to plug in the USB cable. You can check the battery level by pressing the Power button on the front of the box.

The battery life of the earbuds is quite short as you can enjoy music for less than 4 hours on a single charge. However, as it comes with the convenient charging station, you can recharge the earbuds anytime and use them for around 20 hours.

The earbuds are made of plastic and they have a fairly big case to house batteries inside. There is a button on the outside to turn on the earbuds, and play/pause the music. The ear tips don’t fit my ears snugly, so I don’t really feel comfortable wearing them. They haven’t dropped out yet but I highly recommend you to use the included string when you use the earbuds outdoors.

Audio Quality

The design of the Syllable D900s is not bad at all, so I expected an acceptable sound coming from the earbuds. Unfortunately, my experience with the product is just terrible.

The Bluetooth range is the worst in all Bluetooth products I’ve ever used. The music keeps being interrupted when I’m just 10ft away from my phone. More seriously, the volume is not balanced properly. Sometimes, I can hear the left earbud produce a louder sound while the right one emits a very silent sound.

Even when the earbuds properly worked, I also didn’t enjoy their sound signature. The bass is good but not deep and tight enough while the mids and highs sound a little harsh for me. The sound is clear but lacks details. These even don’t sound as good as some cheap wireless in-ear headphones I’ve reviewed.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Convenient charging station
  • Truly wireless design

Cons

  • Bad Bluetooth range
  • Audio issues
  • Underwhelming sound

The Syllable D900s is a promising product and it totally gets rid of cable when I’m listening to music. Unfortunately, the implementation or quality control is just terrible and totally ruined my experience. I don’t recommend the earbuds at the moment.
