Prevent Visual Hacking with 3M Privacy Filter

Updated on Jun 22, 2015 by Tuan Do

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of 3M Company for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

While high-tech cyber attacks become so popular these days, there is another risk of the old-fashioned physical spying in your office that you shouldn’t ignore, it is also called visual hacking.

The concern of visual privacy is so serious that it becomes one of the top security issues for organizations, especially when employees have flexibility to work from home or just finish their work away from the office. According to Thomson, Herbert H, PhD. “Visual Data Breach Risk Assessment Study.” 2010. People Consulting Services, 2/3rd of workers show sensitive information on mobile devices outside the office. With cameras and curious eyes everywhere, who can guarantee your confidential and private information won’t be captured for unauthorized use? Just imagine you have confidential company spreadsheets or presentations for an upcoming product, what is the consequence if someone takes out their cellphone and take pictures of your laptop screen? Learn More About Visual Hacking.

According to Risks & Rewards of Online & Mobile Health Services: Consumer attitudes Explored, Ponemon Institute/Experian Data Breach Resolution Report, April 2014, workers report that their visual privacy is violated seriously, specifically 69% in the workplace, 55% while traveling, and 51% in public places like a cafe or hotel. With just a piece of information like employee’s login credentials, the hacker can get access to the whole customer information and possibly turn it into a large-scale data breach. How can you maintain customer trust when you can’t protect their information?

One way to protect employees is using privacy filter and screen protectors on computer screens in open spaces. 3M is a leader in visual privacy solutions and they are offering 3M visual privacy products to black out side views of screens from prying eyes but still allow the user to see a clear image. It doesn’t work only on computer screens but also on tablet and smartphone displays. Learn More About 3M™ Privacy Products.

I’ve got a chance to test the 3M Gold Privacy Filter which offers even better clarity and sharpness for my MacBook Pro 15 with Retina Display. While users still see a crystal clear view, visual hackers beside you will only see a vibrant golden screen. If you prefer the Black Privacy Filter, you can flip the filter over for the matte black surface. The filter comes with 3 optically clear adhesive strips, they are washable and removeable, so you can remove and reattach to the screen anytime. Request a Sample
