Samsung officially introduced the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in late March 2017. This is the biggest Samsung launch for a while as the two products mark a new beginning for the company.
The S8 and S8 Plus smartphones feature massive screens of 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches respectively but their sizes are amazingly compact. This is because Samsung created an infinity display with almost no bezel. The display curves around 2 sides and expands to the top and bottom, the design helps fit a large screen in a smaller body.
In terms of specs, these are the most powerful smartphones on the market. Depending on the region, you will get the Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835 SoC, but either of them has top-notch performance. Some other notable features include a 12MP camera sensor with OIS, a 3,000 mAh or 3,5000 mAh battery, the new Bixby personal assistant, Bluetooth 5.0, an iris scanner, a rear fingerprint scanner, and IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. You can also pair the phone with the DeX dock to turn it into a desktop PC-like environment.
The S8 and S8 Plus start shipping in April and the full retail prices in the U.S. start at $750 and $850 respectively. The phones are available in 5 different colors, which are midnight black, orchid grey, arctic silver, coral blue, and maple gold.
In case you want to buy an unlocked phone on eBay or somewhere outside the U.S., you should consider carefully because they come in a wide variety of model numbers. The model numbers of the Galaxy S8 start with SM-G950 while those of S8 Plus start with SM-G955. Notably, Samsung skipped the G940 and G945 numbers because the number 4 is considered an unlucky number in many Asian countries.
So, we will have some Samsung Galaxy S8 models like SM-G950U, SM-G950W, SM-G9500, SM-G9508, SM-G950F, SM-G950 S/K/L, or SM-G950FD. Some Galaxy S8 Plus models are SM-G955U, SM-G955W, SM-G9550, SM-G9558, SM-G955F, SM-G955 S/K/L, or SM-G955FD. Don’t be spreading disinformation … neither the G955W variant (Canadian carriers, eg. Rogers, Bell) nor the G955U variant (American carriers, eg. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon) of the S8+ has an unlocked bootloader! This point can be stated succinctly like this ᎓ S8+ variants that feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor (which all the ones mentioned above do) do NOT have an unlocked bootloader.
It is the Exynos-bearing variants (eg. Asian models) that have the “OEM unlocking” option available in “Developer options”, which itself is hidden until/unless unhidden by the user. In Snapdragon variants, even if “Developer options” is made visible, the “OEM unlocking” option which unlocks the bootloader is NOT present.
For what it’s worth, and for those that may not know, you unhide “Developer options” by going into Settings on the S8+, and then ᎓

Once you visually locate “Build number”, start tapping it repeatedly. You’ll see a pop-up message at the bottom of the screen telling you how many more taps are needed to turn on “Developer options”, so it counts backwards in other words. It used to be 7 taps were required, but I think it’s a bit more now, might be ≈ 10 now. Regardless … once it’s triggered, back up a couple of levels to the Settings base folder, and you’ll see “Developer options” underneath “About phone” at the bottom. Not that it’ll help you unlock the bootloader if yours is a Snapdragon variant, like the OP ( not to mention yours truly ).

Can anyone confirm for me regarding the version for Europe, I know it’s SM-G955F, however comparing the Cellular Bands each version works on, the SM-G955FD (Dual-Sim) version has the same Cellular Bands, although it’s specified that it works only in Asia. Won’t it work for Europe too? isn’t there any Dual-Sim version for Europe? Also, how come Europe is getting a 4GB RAM and a 64GB maximum storage capacity, yet there is a 6GB RAM with a 128GB for other countries/continents???

Yes, you totally can use the G955FD in Europe. All of us get the version with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The special edition with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is not available yet, and there is no plan of global release.

I just started coming across the SG S8+ 6GB 128GB also with Dual-SIM for sale online from China, however it’s not SM-G955FD, but SM-G9550 for China. Although they confirmed that it is Dual-SIM along with the specs and works Worldwide too. I’ve compared the Frequencies and Bandwidth and it seems to match with the ones in Europe, however it’s only available in China and made for China specified in some websites, so it makes me think twice. Could you kindly confirm if true please? Thanks.

Vladimir. Most of the regions just are there to tell where they are sold. The G955FD is the international model which works everywhere. I read some reports that they might be region locked and that the seller needs to put in a SIM card of the specified region and make a 5 minute call to unlock the device. I have no experience with this. It is just info I get from reading up on the models.
One advice I can give you is to stay clear of the G9550. Yes, it has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage but it runs on the Snapdragon and with the release of the S8 it is fair to say the Exynos is a bit better (Better battery performance, etc…read up on it). Another issue with the G9550 is how restricted google apps are on it. Even the standard app store isn’t on it and many functions are adjusted to Chinese laws. I read a few people bought that model and experienced numerous issues to get it working.

I already bought SM-G955FD from Asia, but I leave in Germany.some one told me befote travelling to europe I need to make a 5min call with a regional SIM(e.g a SIM from middle east) in order to activate the phone, so then I can use it in Europe; otherwise, if I don’t do that It won’t work!

Yes…if your phone that you bought is locked on a region where you just purchased it… You need to call first any local or international calls. For 5minutes and that would be it… Its totally unlocked. Where ever you go with your mobile on different countries you can use it with no worries.

Yes, You will need to make outgoing call with sim card of the country where you bought phone, for not less than 5 minutes, and after this its will work all-around the world. I have G550 FD, bought in Saudi Arabia, now working with Ukrainian sim card. But on beginning was regional lock, which was disabled by 5 minutes call with Saudi sim card.

My current plan is to get an S8+ unlocked and get an AT&T plan. I live in US but plan a bucket list trip to western Canada (British Columbia and Alberta). My understanding is the major cell networks in western Canada are Telus, Rogers, and Bell.
First, will the model G955UZKAXAA work in western Canada?
Second, will I be able to switch from AT&T to T Mobile or Verizon by getting a different SIM in the future?
Last, although not a hardware question, in chatting with AT&T about one of their plans with no roaming in Canada, they led me to believe they were not tied to any one Canadian network but would “attach” to whatever network that was available. Does that seem reasonable to you?

The only difference is that the F model has 1 SIM card and the FD model has 2. They will both work worldwide.

I bought G950 FD in Saudi Arabia. Insert my Ukrainian sim card, and it was asking Code for unlocking regional restriction . To unlock, you need to insert any Saudi Arabia sim card and make outgoing call for more than 5 minutes, and its will unlock for all sim cards. After 5 minutes call with Saudi sim card, my telephone working with Ukrainian sim card also. No need to pay for any code on website or visit service center.

950FD seems best since it is dual sim but it does not have band 12 which is the main tmobile US band.
The Canadian version (SM-G950W) has all the world bands but is single SIM.
