Samsung Galaxy S20 Model Number SM-G980*, SM-G981* Differences

Updated on Jan 20, 2021 by Tuan Do

Samsung announced three new models in the Galaxy series for 2020. The Galaxy S20 is the most affordable version with the price tag of $999 in the United States.

Despite being the entry-level edition, the S20 is still a high-end smartphone with almost the same hardware found on its bigger brothers. Specifically, it features a 6.2-inch Quad HD+ Infinity-O AMOLED display with HDR10+ and 120Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or Samsung Exynos 990 processor, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 128GB of onboard storage, 4,000 mAh battery, and a triple camera system (12MP ultra-wide, 12MP wide, and 64MP telephoto camera) with 8K video recording. Most average consumers will be satisfied with this version because they actually don’t need features like 512GB storage, 108MP camera, or mmWave 5G connectivity. Samsung even releases a more affordable S20 4G LTE version in some markets.

The Galaxy S20 comes in numerous model numbers for different markets but all of them start with SM-G980 and SM-G981. If you are not buying the phone from an official store, you should check the model number carefully because it will decide the color option, internal storage, RAM, processor, 5G availability, and supported cellular bands. The SM-G980 models only support 4G LTE and has 8GB of RAM while SM-G981 models have 5G and 12GB of RAM. For more details, please check out the comparison table below.

Hi can the 5G network be deselected on the phone if the user only wants to use 4G? 5 G is dangerous. Thanks for any help.

5G is not dangerous, thats a scam running in the internet.
in-fact its less dangerous because your phone antenna would intake less power to connect to the nearest antenaa (5g antennas needs to be visible or very close for your phone to work and connect to them)

Hello: I have a clarification question on the U.S. Factory Unlocked model, listed here as the last entry in the above table, SM-G981U. A number of other websites list the SM-G981U as a U.S. multiple carrier model, but that the SM-G981U1 is actually fully unlocked (presumably meaning it can work in non-U.S. markets with appropriate local or regional SIMs.) Can you address this difference? Thanks very much.
