Kodak Luma 500 Review – An Impressive Mini Projector with Native 1080p Resolution

By Tuan Do

When it comes to portable projectors, I’ve used a lot of them, mostly for backyard movies or Halloween digital decorations. Compromises are inevitable, especially when we have to balance size, brightness, resolution, and price. The Kodak Luma 500 is the most compact projector I’ve ever used and I was excited to give it a try.

Disclosure: We received the projector as a courtesy for review purposes. However, the review is intended to provide honest, unbiased insights about the product, based on personal experiences and observations.

Design

Kodak clearly put a lot of thought into making the Luma 500 feel premium. The body has a clean, modern look, and it feels solid despite its size. There’s no flimsy plastic or cheap finishes – it looks and feels like a high-end product.

One of the most impressive aspects of this projector is how tiny it is. It fits in a pocket. When I first unboxed it, I couldn’t believe a device this small could project an image that large. That said, the small size does come with some compromises in audio. The built-in speaker is just good enough for quiet rooms and small gatherings, but if you’re planning a proper movie night, I highly recommend pairing it with a Bluetooth speaker.

It also comes equipped with a built-in 10,500 mAh battery. This allows you to enjoy movies anywhere without looking for an outlet. The battery life lasts more than an hour, or up to 2 hours in the Eco mode, so you can enjoy a whole movie without plugging in the cord.

OS & Connectivity

The Kodak Luma 500 comes with Google TV, and I’ve been surprised by how smooth the experience is. The interface is simple, clean, and easy to navigate. It’s not the snappiest UI, I’ve noticed a bit of lag when switching between apps or scrolling through menus – but it’s never been frustrating or unusable. Everything you need is right there, from Netflix and YouTube to other streaming platforms, and setup takes just a few minutes.

What really makes it more user-friendly are the auto focus and auto keystone correction features. These functions save me a lot of time during setup, as the projector automatically adjusts the image to keep it sharp and properly aligned without much effort on my part. For something so small, it’s impressive to see these advanced features built in.

In terms of connectivity, you also get the standard options like HDMI, USB, and built-in Chromecast. Fortunately, I don’t need those external connectivities since the built-in OS is good enough; We don’t need to use an external device like Amazon Fire TV Stick or Apple TV.

Picture Quality

I typically place the Luma 500 about 11 feet away from the screen, and to my surprise, it projects to a screen size of around 90 inches. For such a small device, that’s remarkable. The image fills up the space nicely, and even though this isn’t a high-powered home theater projector, the picture quality is perfectly enjoyable in my basement. The visuals look clean and vibrant enough for casual viewing in a dark room, but once any ambient light seeps in, it struggles. This is understandable for mini projectors, this one has just 150 ANSI-lumen brightness.

For the best results, I’ve found that projecting onto a smaller screen – something in the 50-inch range – really helps boost brightness and sharpness. At that size, the Luma 500 delivers a picture that looks crisper, with colors that don’t feel washed out.

Yes, there are many other models out there that deliver better brightness, higher resolution, or even more features for less money, but very few can compete with the Kodak’s ultra-compact footprint. This is perfect for travel, small apartments, or even backyard movie nights if you’re willing to stick with a smaller screen.

Conclusion

The Kodak Luma 500 is not the best projector for the money, but it just might be the most convenient. The premium pricing is the trade-off for that convenience. You’re essentially paying for portability here. If you don’t care about size and just want the best picture quality per dollar, there are better deals on the market.
