LG G5 Model Numbers (LG H820, H830, H840, H848, H850, H860, VS987, LS992) Differences

By Tuan Do

The LG G5 is hitting the market around the world, however, you should be extremely careful because there are some variants of the flagship. Not all LG G5 phones are built with the same hardware, so you might end up getting a mid-range smartphone that has similar performance as its predecessor, the LG G4.

LG_G5

Before ordering the phone online or hitting the store, I recommend you to check with that store and ask which phone you will receive. There are 9 model numbers of the LG G5, you can either have an LG H840, H848, H850, VS987, H820, LS992, H830, US992 or H860N. The number can be found on the box or on the back of the phone. Let’s see the differences between these models.

LG G5 H840 (Latin America, Southeast Asia) / H848 (Chinese version) LG G5 H850 (Europe) / VS987 (Verizon) / H820 (AT&T) / LS992 (Sprint) / H830 (T-Mobile) / US992 (US Cellular) / H860N (Hong Kong)

The model on right column is obviously a better choice just by looking at the specs sheet. It is equipped with the more expensive and powerful Snapdragon 820, so this LG G5 version will have better performance and faster LTE speeds. Otherwise, they have the same modular design, feature Quick Charge 3.0, 4K video capture, and work with all new attachable accessories like the Bang & Olufsen-powered LG Hi-Fi Plus or LG Cam Plus.

There’s newer model number ‘H860N’ here in the Middle East which is exact same as H850 (SD820 and 4GB RAM) + dual sim (support LTE Cat6 only though, 2nd sim slot 2g).

The H860N is designed for people in Hong Kong. It will work on G2 and G3 bands where ever you are, but it might not pick up European and US LTE/4G
G – I have not been to Israel since I had my G3 dual sim, and it would not go to LTE or 4G in Israel.

That is the Hong Kong version. Dual Sim Dual Standby. However it may not get G4 signal speed if you travel to the US. However if you live in Iran I doubt that is a problem.

        Hello I am from Iran.
I bought two lg g5 phones for about 1 month ago.
But after dropping the Yosem Irancell SIM card and staying in the network coverage of 4.5g, I realized that this handset. That is, the lg g5 h860 does not support the 4G + Irancell internet.
With the general wanderings and frequent contacts with Irancell company operators and changes in settings, as well as spending time and studying the views of many users of this model of the phone, namely the g5h860 model. I noticed that the ROM is not compatible with the 2.4G BTSs of the Irancell Company, and it only shows the 4g mark and in no way marks the 4g +
Please, if possible, share this issue with LG to send a new update for the LG phones of the lgg5h860 model and fix it.

Happened same thing to me. It has a set back on the camera, no raw files, and that’s why I bought it :(
And about the price, it was quite expensive here, never thought I have buying a “cheaper” option

      • Laurence says

        Aug 19, 2017 at 5:00 am

@pily, late I know but I too just got an H840 without realising there was no raw capture option in the camera app. Good news is the 840 does support raw, just not LG’s 840 camera app, so all you have to do is switch to a third party app like Open Camera or Camera FV-5. You can’t set the double volume down tap to open it though, which is a shame.

You may find problems with getting G4 and be stuck on G3 signal speed
T-Mobile sell only the H850 so they will say they do not know if you ask them
      It is a risk
      G2 and G3 will work

I used previous dual sim models from Hong Kong e.g. for the G3 model D858HK (model H860N for the G5) for European, US and Canadian business trips. The only problem is that despite the technical specifications for the LTE bands matching (i.e. my SIM provider and the LG phone specification), the phone would not use 4G in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, USA or Canada. For work the important thing was carrying two SIMs to avoid international roaming data charging. I used my voice number in slot 2 (2G!!) when outside the UK and put a local data only SIM into slot 1 (2/3/4G). So if you do not mind running on G3 (when not on Chinma or HK) that Hong Kong version of the G5 is probably the highest spec with the most international coverage.

BUT….something else has significant crept back in under the radar: The G3 Dual Sim D858HK was sold as “Dual Sim Dual Active”, whereas the G5 Dual Sim H860N is being sold as “dual stand-by”. I think that this might be due to the fact that Dual Active technology was causing phones to heat up and get damaged over time.

    In my humble opinion
1 x “dual sim dual active” (DSDA) G3 was better than carrying 2 x devices (even if I was reduced to G3)
2 x G5s are better than carrying 1 x “dual sim dual standby” (DSDS). Because when you use one sim the other may as well be switched off.

Apparently the HTC One dual sim variant is DSDA. For example the OnePlus 3 is DSDS.

Having run out of battery on my last dragonite encounter, using two phones is now attractive. I carry two identical 850s with two back up batteries. However I have sims from three countries so still looking for the ultimate DSDA device

Thank you for your website. I have just been looking for an LG G5 after my LG G4 stopped working. I have seen model numbers 860 and 850 for sale in the UK, with no explanation of the difference. The 860 model which I now know is the Hong Kong model was £10 cheaper.

At the moment I am waiting until after Christmas 2016 / 17 to see if Argos do a sale. They are offering it with the Cam Com module. They also do the phone without the Cam Com module which is more expensive. I think that just says something about their pricing.

Will the LG G5 RS988 work with carriers outside North America? The RS988 is a carrier-unlocked North American specific model but its GSM, 3G and LTE bands are mostly the same with the carrier bands in my country Nigeria. You might say I should just get the Interternational version that is H850 but the RS988 cost much less than the H850 on Amazon. 250 or 450 bucks? 250 ofcourse. Initially I wanted to purchase an unlocked at&t (H820) but I read somewhere that you won’t get android nougat OTA update if you use the H820 on a carrier other than at&t, and there’s no at&t in Nigeria. I would be happy if someone can help out.

Stay away from this phone. It is utter garbage and ranks as the worst phone I have ever owned! I though the I phone and Samsung had issues, no way! I have the LG G5 VS987 version with Verizon. I had it one day, sat it down on a wood table (no dropping) and the screen cracked! Less than 24 hours with a screen protector too! Verizon wants $150 to fix the glass only (no need for digitizer) and that’s with their extra insurance! The call quality and reception are so poor that they are akin to 1990’s technology. No matter what setting is changed, I have to go into the middle of my yard in 2017 to use it! My husband has an I phone 6 and it works fine in the house. The battery cannot hold a charge from day one and I have to lug the charger everywhere, even on a 10 minute trip to the gas station! Verizon is worthless. Now, I have to replace the screen before they will even look at it for other issues. Its 10 months olf and it won’t charge without being turned off for 5 hours. After the last update it quit working with its charger and keeps saying to use the manufacturers charger, which it is. The screen now has a million cracks. Most from setting it down. Its been dropped once. The camera screen in back is cracked too. Its almost laughable. My hubby paid extra for lifetime screen protectors from the store. Guess what, they quit making them!! So he spent a ton of cash for nothing. Again, Verizon stinks and will take you for every dime. I can’t wait to return it and tell Verizon where to go. Save yourself the money and stay away! They charged my hubby a ton to lease this junk. The total cost was the same as an I phone and we pay monthly for it. It is no where near the quality and certainly not worth $600.00+. There is not one good quality I can find for the LG G5 or Verizon. Hope this saves one person!
