How to Install an Outdoor Outlet Cover – Using Sealproof 1-Gang Weatherproof In Use Outlet Cover

By Tuan Do

Outdoor electrical outlets are must-haves for any home as we need them for powering tools, holiday decorations, or other outdoor equipment. Protecting these outlets with a weatherproof cover, such as the Sealproof 1-Gang, ensures safety in the long term. The Sealproof is a significant upgrade over my previous metal outlet cover because it offers continuous protection, even when the outlet is in use.

Step 1: Turn Off Power to the Outlet

Locate the circuit breaker panel and turn off the breaker controlling the outlet. Use a voltage tester to confirm the power is off by inserting the probe into the outlet to ensure no voltage is present.

Step 2: Remove the Existing Cover

Unscrew and remove the current outlet cover. Inspect the outlet box for any dirt or debris and clean the area to ensure a good seal for the new cover. If you see any sign of rust on the receptacle, you should replace it with a water-resistant one.

Step 3: Attach the Outlet Cover

Open the Sealproof package and identify all parts: the cover, base, and screws. Check if the provided base fits around the outlet.

Place the base against the outlet box and align the screw holes of the base with those on the outlet. The base with its gasket creates a watertight seal, preventing moisture from entering.

Align the Sealproof cover over the base and insert the plastic pin to hold it. The Sealproof cover is designed to protect outlets while in use. You can use a plier to open a port on the bottom or on the side of the cover.

Step 4: Seal Around the Edges (Optional)

For additional protection, apply a bead of outdoor-grade silicone caulking around the edges of the cover and outlet box. Smooth the caulking with your finger or a caulking tool for a clean finish.

Step 5: Restore Power and Test

Turn the breaker back on. Plug in a device to test the outlet and ensure everything is functioning correctly. Check that the cover closes properly and that cords fit securely when the outlet is in use.

The Sealproof cover is UL-listed and provides robust protection against rain, snow, and dust. Its hinged design makes it practical for in-use scenario, keeping your outdoor outlets safe and operational year-round.
