The market for minimal phones has been steadily growing as more people push back against the dependency on smartphones. They are supposed to reclaim our time, reduce distractions, and avoid endless notifications and social media. They are especially useful for elderlies or parents looking for basic devices for their kids.

When I first picked up the Mudita Kompakt, I was immediately impressed with its differences. It isn’t trying to be an all-in-one device in your pocket. If you felt overwhelmed by constant notifications or numerous apps on your iPhone, the Kompakt is like a breath of fresh air. Once I started using the phone, I quickly noticed how carefully chosen its features are. Unlike a regular smartphone, this one provides you with just some essential apps and there’s even a physical switch to shut off GSM and microphones, and software toggles that let you disable WiFi, Bluetooth, and the camera when you don’t need them.

The design is clean and minimal with a 4.3-inch E-Ink display. I’ve always been a fan of e-ink screen because reading text on it is comfortable, with no glare even in bright sunlight, and my eyes don’t feel strained after long use. The body itself is made of plastic with a reinforced metal frame and IP54 resistance to dust and splashes.

The battery life is another strength. With a 3,300 mAh battery, the company claims it can last up to 6 days on standby. It lasted me much longer than my iPhone as I no longer check the phone regularly for notifications or social media. Reading long text or PDFs felt natural on the E-Ink display but the screen is a bit too small for reading books.

The performance of the phone can’t be as responsive as an iPhone; That’s clear when opening apps or switching tasks. With only 3 GB of RAM and a slower processor, it isn’t built for multitasking or demanding apps. Sideloading software is possible but it is complicated and I don’t want to ruin the simplicity of this phone.

I found myself enjoying the experience more than I expected, however, I’m not a targeted user of this phone. On my iPhone, I avoid distractions by hiding social media apps and use the built-in Focus mode to silence notifications; So screen time is not really an issue for me and I still need some smart features and a good-quality camera of the iPhone. The camera on the Mudita Kompakt has a lot of limitations and it is not really useful.
If you rely heavily on apps or games and want fast performance, you’ll probably be disappointed with this phone. But if you’re someone who needs a basic phone to reduce screen time, the Kompakt is a good choice. Having said that, its price is unreasonable at over $400; Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the phone at this price.
