LG G5 Model Numbers (LG H820, H830, H840, H848, H850, H860, VS987, LS992) Differences

By Tuan Do

The LG G5 is hitting the market around the world, however, you should be extremely careful because there are some variants of the flagship. Not all LG G5 phones are built with the same hardware, so you might end up getting a mid-range smartphone that has similar performance as its predecessor, the LG G4.

Before ordering the phone online or hitting the store, I recommend you to check with that store and ask which phone you will receive. There are 9 model numbers of the LG G5, you can either have an LG H840, H848, H850, VS987, H820, LS992, H830, US992 or H860N. The number can be found on the box or on the back of the phone. Let’s see the differences between these models.

The model on right column is obviously a better choice just by looking at the specs sheet. It is equipped with the more expensive and powerful Snapdragon 820, so this LG G5 version will have better performance and faster LTE speeds. Otherwise, they have the same modular design, feature Quick Charge 3.0, 4K video capture, and work with all new attachable accessories like the Bang & Olufsen-powered LG Hi-Fi Plus or LG Cam Plus.

    Hi:

I work on LG G5 phones and do a good job. BUT, can someone there tell me what makes the Displays so that they are NOT interchangeable between models? Is it just the Frame that is unique? Seems the basic LCD & Digitizer should be the same for all models… LS992, VS987, H820, H803, etc. Would really appreciate knowing.

    Thanks!
    Tom

ive just had a look on google and they not interchangeable, there was two LCD & Digitizer that i looked at both looked the same but on the screen cable that goes to the phone one is vertical and the other screen its horizontal so the motherboard must be a different layout on the each of the boards we will have to remove the screen on the phone and checked the cable before ordering any

Hello, found this very interesting and informative. I bought LG G5 about 4 years ago from ebayUK. The phone is badged Verizon so assume from your description above it is the higher spec VS987 (Verizon) I have been pleased with the phone but the lilnk to Verizon means it is not truly compatible for use in the UK…..repairs have been problematic etc.
Phone is now terminal; what would you suggest as best replacement? I don’t follow the trend of ever more features/price. Would like to stick with LG
    Thanks
    John

I’m in a similar boat – looking for a new LG. My G5 still works fine but I’ve been looking at other newer models this week. My problem is almost all of the newer LG phones (and phones in general) have non-removable batteries now, and I like having the option of swapping out a battery when it goes bad rather than having to spend money on the battery AND $50-$75 for a tech to carefully open it up and replace it. I’m finding it difficult to compromise on this factor, but the last phone with a removable battery they made was the LG V20, which is only months newer than the G5. I may just keep my G5 until it dies, haha.

I’d say if you don’t care about having a non-removable battery or having to pay a lot check out reviews on some newer LGs. There is a big caveat to this though: LG just stopped making phones in recent weeks, so that means there won’t be future updates forever. I think they made a pledge to update for an additional 3 years or something, but look into it ’cause I’m not 100% sure. For me, I never cared about updates, but I also don’t live on my phone or have sensitive info packed in it like many people these days.

From all my research, if you want something less expensive of high quality it’s usually better to go with an older (2019) flagship phone rather than a brand new budget phone made of cheaper components. That said, these days there are a plethora of decent phones out there. If you decide not to stay with LG just search, “best budget phones” or “best mid-range phones” or “best flagship phones” depending on your budget, and sift through the slop until you find one that shines for you. And make sure it’s compatible with your carrier of course.

Can I make my pristine LS992 into an H830 by swapping something from a broken H830? The LS992 won’t take a T-Moble sim card.
